Being pregnant is such an incredible experience. I tried my best to savor every moment, especially with my last pregnancy.
However, it sometimes felt like I would be pregnant forever!
Looking back, I realize that my pregnancies were such a relatively short snippet of time. I mean, my babies aren’t babies anymore (my oldest will be 11 in just a few weeks and my youngest will soon be 5 – how on earth did that happen?!).
I cherish the times I had with each of my babies kicking around inside me, but it doesn’t mean it was always enjoyable or without any pain and discomfort!
Throughout each of my pregnancies, there were times when I wasn’t even sure I was going to make it through the day. At night, I would waddle my way to our bedroom and collapse into bed with aching feet and a sore back.
Thankfully, there were some things I found that made pregnant life a bit easier, and I’d love to share these natural pregnancy essentials with you!
If you are pregnant or you know someone who is, then I’m hoping you’ll find my list of must-have pregnancy products helpful!
My 15 Favorite Natural Pregnancy Essentials
1. Prenatal Vitamins
Ideally, you would get all the nutrients that your baby and your pregnant body need through a well-balanced, organic, whole foods based diet. But due to possible nutritional gaps (especially during pregnancy, when it may be hard to keep food down), a quality prenatal vitamin is a must.
It’s best to begin taking prenatal vitamins before conceiving, but if you find yourself already pregnant and you’re not on a prenatal yet, don’t worry! Just pick up a bottle of prenatal vitamins and begin taking them right away. Make sure to look for an organic, non-GMO brand that contains methylfolate as opposed to folic acid.
An excellent choice of prenatal vitamins would be Actif Organic Prenatal Vitamin.
It’s made with over 25 vitamins and minerals, including natural folic acid in the form of methyl folate, choline, iron, calcium, DHA, EPA, and Omega 3. This brand is also gluten-free, dye-free, mercury-free, tested free of all heavy metals and contaminants, and made in the USA.
Also, according to the manufacturer, it is the only 100% organic, non-GMO prenatal currently available.
2. Cod Liver Oil
Rather than taking just any old fish oil supplement or DHA supplement, I choose to take cod liver oil during my pregnancies. Cod liver oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA, and also contains vitamins A and D — all very important for healthy brain development in your baby.
My number one trusted brand of cod liver oil is Rosita because they are 3rd party tested for contaminants and heavy metals, and guarantee the purity of their product. It comes in liquid form or soft gel capsules (which is what I prefer).
3. Tummydrops
If you’ve never suffered from morning sickness all day sickness during pregnancy, then consider yourself very lucky! My morning sickness was terrible with each of my pregnancies, but thankfully, it would always subside shortly after entering the second trimester. But those first 12-14 weeks or so? Brutal.
Tummydrops are surprisingly delicious and really work at keeping nausea away. They are made with organic, non-GMO ingredients, are gluten-free, and come in 3 delicious flavors (the Double Ginger Peach is my favorite!).
4. Lemon Essential Oil
Another way to combat nausea during pregnancy is to take a whiff of lemon. Sounds a little crazy, but it works! I learned this in my first pregnancy when another mama told me to cut a piece of lemon, put it in a plastic baggie, and sniff it periodically. She swore it worked, and it totally did!
I had since decided to try diffusing lemon essential oil in subsequent pregnancies, and that also helped a lot. When I went out of the house during my first trimester, I would put a few drops of the essential oil in a portable diffuser inhaler to keep in my purse. It helped tremendously to pull it out and take a little sniff when my stomach was super queasy.
If you don’t like or can’t stomach the smell of lemon, peppermint essential oil works well, too.
5. Natural Antacids
I never had any heartburn before becoming pregnant, but boy did I sure get a lot of heartburn during each and every one of my pregnancies! Especially in the third trimester, when my stomach was pushed up into my ribs and every little bite I took sent burning stomach acids into my esophagus. Or when I’d lie down in bed. Can you relate at all, mama?
I found that taking a little swig of apple cider vinegar diluted a bit with water helped quell the heartburn. But for the 2 a.m. trips to the bathroom — that wasn’t a very convenient option. So I had a bottle of these all-natural chewable antacid tablets on my nightstand for quick and easy relief. I also threw a bottle in my purse to take with me when I was out.
6. Magnesium Oil
My first symptom of early pregnancy for me is usually headaches. I seem to get a lot of headaches in the first trimester for some reason. Later in pregnancy, I have trouble sleeping due to restless leg syndrome and occasional leg cramps.
Magnesium oil helps all of these issues for me and I couldn’t go through pregnancy without it! I’ve always kept a bottle of this magnesium oil spray by my bed to rub into my legs before sleeping and it always worked like a charm. I can’t recommend it enough!
7. Belly Butter
The more the skin on my pregnant belly stretched, the more dry and itchy it became. I would apply this belly butter to my bump every night before bed, and it helped tremendously to relieve the itchiness. I especially love the Earth Mama brand because it’s made with 100% natural ingredients and is free from parabens, petroleum, mineral oil, and artificial fragrance. It really soothed the dry, itchy skin on my growing bump. And it has a nice light scent, too!
8. Raspberry Leaf Tea
Drinking raspberry leaf tea during pregnancy strengthens and tones the uterus, which can help with contractions during labor. It can also increase milk supply, which makes it a great tea to drink during and after pregnancy.
9. Natural Hair Products
Gentle yet highly cleansing, Calia Natural shampoo and conditioner formulations are 100% natural and safe for pregnancy. They’re made using all-natural ingredients and mildly fragranced with pure essential oils. The non-toxic hair care products are made without any sulfates, DEA, sodium, propylene glycol, and are never tested on animals.
There are several different formulations to choose from, based on your hair type and your specific needs. There are even unscented versions, as well.
My hair has been so soft and tangle-free since starting to use Calia Natural products!
10. Pregnancy Pillow
When my hips and back started to ache so badly in my first pregnancy and throwing a random pillow between my knees at night wasn’t cutting it anymore, I went and bought a pregnancy pillow. It turned out to be a game-changer for me! I wished I had bought it sooner.
This pregnancy pillow is the exact one I used, and it made sleeping so much better for me! It was comfortable, supported my belly, and also supported my back. It’s definitely a must-have for any pregnant woman.
11. Exercise Ball
An exercise ball is a great thing to utilize during pregnancy! Towards the end of my third trimester, I always liked gently bouncing on my exercise ball while watching TV with my hubby at night. It helped take the weight of my belly off of my back and hips a bit. It’s also beneficial for upcoming labor by loosening the ligaments in the hips and helping the baby to start to engage in the pelvis. Not only that, but it’s fun!
12. Belly EMF Shield
This belly shield is made of an organic cotton and bamboo blend and protects your developing baby from harmful EMF radiation and 5G frequencies. It features an adjustable elastic band and is incredibly soft.
13. Maternity Sleep Bra
This maternity bra has no underwire, lots of stretch while still being supportive, and is made with organic cotton. I loved using these during my pregnancy and then afterward to feed my babies once they were here!
14. Cloth Panty Liners
Made out of certified organic cotton, these cloth panty liners are the perfect non-toxic solution for post-partum recovery. They’re also great for wicking away moisture during pregnancy, as well. They come in several different absorbancy and pattern options.
15. Magnesium Bath Soak
Ancient Minerals Magnesium Bath Flakes are 100% pure dead sea salt flakes that help ease pregnancy aches and pains and help you relax. Simply pour some flakes into a warm bathtub and let your skin absorb the magnesium. Unscented for nauseous mamas, this is a soothing treat that’s totally worth it!
